Aromatherapy is becoming well known as a successful means to treat alopecia areata. In an effort to stimulate the underlying follicles into producing hair again, essential oil formulas are massaged into the scalp. The essential oils act as a rubefacient, causing dilation of the capillaries and an increase in blood circulation. This increased blood supply circulates to the scalp delivering additional nutrients, oxygen and energy to the hair follicles. Extreme care must be taken when using essential oils on children. Not too long ago, seeking help for hair loss often resulted in frustration and hopelessness. Hair loss was not viewed as a medical priority. It was considered a cosmetic problem in which there was no cure. Few practitioners were trained in the matter, and little information was available. Hypnotherapy encourages the participant to leave behind negative, limiting thoughts about not being able to have gorgeous hair. Some participants even claim to feel a tingling sensation in the scalp.

Almost all newborns lose some if not all of their hair during the first six months of life. In most cases this is a normal process that should not cause any alarm as the hair eventually grows back. The new hair may be a completely different color and texture than at birth! This article reviews the types of hair loss that affects infants and children. Some are congenital in nature and may include hair shaft disorders. Others are aqcuired and can be treated once the cause is identified.

There have been at least 60 reported cases of hair loss occurring after routine vaccines. One case involved a 56 year old woman who developed extensive hair loss weeks after receiving the influenza virus vaccine. The same woman had similar but less severe symptoms after a prior influenza virus vaccine the previous year. Vaccinations can be indirectly involved with other cases of hair loss as they have also been associated with the onset of autoimmune disorders and other disorders.
